Body Image, Family Dynamics & Situational Role Changes

A significant change in appearance or function (surgery, amputation, ostomy creation, visible scarring, weight change from illness or treatment) can profoundly affect a patient's body image and self-concept, and the nursing response should validate these feelings as a real and expected part of adjustment rather than minimizing them ("it's just a bandage" or "you'll get used to it") or rushing the patient toward acceptance before they're ready. Encouraging the patient to look at and eventually participate in caring for a changed body part (such as an ostomy) at their own pace, connecting them with peer support (such as an ostomy support group), and involving family in a way the patient is comfortable with all support healthy adjustment, while pushing a patient to view or handle a change before they're ready can actually slow adaptation.
