Contraceptive counseling should be non-judgmental and tailored to the patient's goals, medical history, and preferences — combined hormonal methods (containing estrogen) are generally avoided in patients with a history of migraine with aura, uncontrolled hypertension, or a history of blood clots, since estrogen increases clotting risk in these groups; progestin-only methods are a safer alternative in those situations.
