Know the difference between informed consent (a licensed provider's responsibility to explain the procedure, risks, benefits and alternatives — the nurse's role is to witness the signature and verify understanding, not to obtain consent) and advance directives (living wills and durable power of attorney for healthcare, which apply only when the patient loses decision-making capacity).
