Standard & Transmission-Based Precautions
Standard precautions (hand hygiene, PPE with any exposure risk, safe injection practices) apply to every patient, every time. Beyond that, three transmission-based categories layer on top: Airborne (measles, varicella, TB, disseminated herpes zoster — N95/PAPR + negative-pressure room), Droplet (influenza, pertussis, mumps, meningococcal meningitis — surgical mask, private room or 3+ ft separation), and Contact (MRSA, C. difficile, scabies, wound infections — gown and gloves).
