Distinguish hypoglycemia (rapid onset — shakiness, diaphoresis, confusion, treated immediately with fast-acting carbohydrate, then a complex carbohydrate/protein snack) from diabetic ketoacidosis/hyperglycemia (slower onset — polyuria, polydipsia, Kussmaul respirations, fruity breath, treated with IV fluids, insulin, and potassium replacement since insulin drives potassium into cells and can cause dangerous hypokalemia during treatment).
