Guillain-Barré Syndrome & Myasthenia Gravis

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune condition, often triggered by a preceding infection, causing progressive, typically ascending weakness that starts in the legs and moves upward — the most urgent concern is respiratory muscle involvement, so frequent monitoring of respiratory function (vital capacity, ability to take a deep breath, cough strength) is a priority nursing assessment, since respiratory failure can develop even while the patient still appears to have reasonably strong limb strength. Most patients eventually recover, though recovery can take weeks to months, and supportive care (including possible mechanical ventilation during the acute phase) is central to management.
