Skin cancer screening centers on recognizing the warning signs of melanoma, the most dangerous form, using the ABCDE mnemonic: Asymmetry (one half doesn't match the other), Border irregularity (ragged, notched, or blurred edges rather than smooth), Color variation (multiple colors or shades within the same lesion), Diameter greater than about 6mm (roughly the size of a pencil eraser), and Evolving (any change in size, shape, color, or symptoms like itching or bleeding over time). A new or changing mole, or one that looks distinctly different from a patient's other moles (sometimes called the "ugly duckling" sign), warrants prompt referral for evaluation and possible biopsy, since early detection significantly improves outcomes in melanoma.
