Neutropenia & Immunocompromise

Neutropenia — a low absolute neutrophil count — significantly raises infection risk, since neutrophils are the primary white blood cell defending against bacterial infection. Nursing management uses neutropenic precautions, sometimes called reverse or protective isolation: the goal is protecting the vulnerable patient from the environment, which is the opposite logic of precautions used for a contagious patient. This includes strict hand hygiene for everyone entering the room, avoiding fresh flowers and raw fruits/vegetables (which can carry bacteria and mold), limiting visitors who are ill, and avoiding live vaccines, which could cause actual infection in someone whose immune system can't mount a normal, controlled response.
