Metabolic Syndrome & Obesity-Related Complications
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when a patient has several of: abdominal/central obesity, elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting glucose, elevated triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol — together, these markedly increase cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes risk beyond what any single factor would predict alone. Nursing teaching focuses on the modifiable components: weight management through sustainable dietary changes and regular physical activity, blood pressure and glucose monitoring, and recognizing that even modest weight loss (often cited around 5-10% of body weight) can meaningfully improve each of these markers.
